Grooved or Smooth Decking? - You decide

One of the most frequently considered questions with regard to decking is should the surface be grooved or smooth.
Here are some factors to help you decide:-

Which type of decking is the easiest to keep clean? Smooth decking on the basis that it is easier to wash and brush down a flat surface that does not have grooves to trap the dirt.
Which type of decking is the least slippery? To the best of our knowledge there is no scientific evidence to suggest that grooved decking is any more anti-slip than smooth. In fact it could be argued that the factor that may cause a deck to be slippy is dirtyness and the algae that forms in that context. If there are grooves on a deck this can provide a place for the algae to grow.
When all the decks, boardwalks and piers in the world (including USA, Canada, Scandinavia) are considered, which type of decking surface is most frequently used? Smooth decking
Which type of decking is least likely to have grooves splinter off of the surface? Smooth decking (there are no ridges on the surface which could potentially splinter off)
Which type of decking looks the best? This is a question of personal taste. Often designers and architects prefer the clean lines of smooth decking.
Why is there so much grooved decking in the UK? When decking first became popular in the UK it was the only real option presented to the public. Fortunately time has moved on and there now is a choice.
